June 14, 1944 – Fire destroyed much of the city of Hoonah, and with it many important Tlingit cultural objects. June 9, 1947 – The Farwest Fisheries Company cannery at Wrangell was destroyed in a $150,000 fire. May 29, 1943 – The U.S. Army activated the Shemya post with 236 officers, seven of them women, and 4,565 enlisted men.

A day after the shootings at Kent State University in 1970, greater than 7,000 demonstrators blocked Interstate 5 in a march from the UW campus, and protests continued in the metropolis for days. These incidents prompted quite a few letters to Mayor Uhlman, the vast majority of them critical of both the “rabble rousers” and the mayor himself. When it grew to become obvious that Seattle was in peril of shedding the staff, residents began writing in with options.
Chapter V: A City Seen But Unseen
After he died in 1985, the salmon banner was flown at half-mast. One track that obtained wider distribution was titled “Seattle, My Own Home Town,” which was written in 1952 and recorded by the Mercer Island Children’s Choir within the early Nineteen Eighties. A citizen sent Mayor Royer the sheet music along with a P-I column which claimed that should you might take heed to it with out tapping your feet, “then a part of you is useless.” Over the years, many have memorialized Seattle in music. In 1961, one Ethelyn Hartwich sent the Council a ditty about maintaining Seattle clean. Twenty years later, a person wrote from Mexico sending his personal Seattle track, written totally in Spanish.
