In the 1920s he was among the first to create and sell color-tinted postcards to the basic public. At about 1874, the household moved to Le Sueur County, Minnesota. As a younger person, he grew to become interested in images and constructed a digital camera using the book, Wilsons Photographics. In 1885, at age seventeen, he apprenticed with a photographer in St. Paul.
