It is clearer as these books go on that the professionals on either side have much more respect for each other than for their less disciplined comrades. The outstanding episode of this volume is Rourke’s encounter with the nonsurvivalists of the little town of Barrington, Kentucky, where the main industry is the manufacture of fireworks. In a plot harking back to Jonestown, these people give their kids one final whale of a Fourth of July and blow themselves up.

Orion Denny was the son of John Denny, higher known as Lake Union John. John spoke Lushootseed and had a Lushootseed name, Cheshiahud. A paved path now known as Cheshiahud round Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, was so named in tribute to John Denny. Dennison Photo was active at 120 ½ Wall Street, Spokane, Washington. J.R. Buchtel partnered in enterprise with Byron Cardwell, Buchtel & Cardwell’s Picture Gallery, starting 1864. Cardwell ultimately bought Buchtel’s interest within the firm.
