When the American navy landed on Tanna, a distant island within the South Pacific during World War II, the islanders were amazed by America’s fantastic cargo – planes, vans, refrigerators, canned food. They thought such goods could solely come from the Gods. Led by the mysterious prophet John, a religion was born, the John Frum Movement, also referred to as a Cargo Cult.

In World War II, pilots invented mythical creatures known as “gremlins” which have been liable for numerous mechanical malfunctions in their planes; but Rushdie may be referring to the demonic little creatures featured in the 1984 film, Gremlins. Jumping or falling to one’s dying is a constant motif in this novel. Compare for example, Rekha Merchant and her kids (pp.14-15). Saladin evidently named his dog after the tiger in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, set in India. Kipling was in all probability alluding to the Medieval Kashmiri chief ‘Alam Sher Khan, whose deeds are recounted within the Baharistan-i-Shahi.
