The paradoxical affiliation of the holy cross with the demonic snake suits the divine/demonic themes of the novel. The historical Martin de la Cruz from whom this character’s name is derived was a 16th-century doctor who wrote the primary medical book written in Colonial America, the Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis . Not the name of an actress, but of the starring position in a movie by the same name, directed in 1964 by Satyajit Ray, and better identified in English as The Lonely Wife. The movie starred Madhabi Mukherjee as Charulata, a neglected spouse who falls in love together with her brother-in-law. “Three Little Words” is the title of a preferred music written in 1930 for an Amos and Andy movie, Check and Double Check, by Harry Ruby and Bert Kalmar. The words are, in fact, “I love you.” Instead, Gibreel replies with one other, very unsatisfactory, three phrases.
